Golf cart rules in Surfside Beach, SC

The driver must be at least 16 and hold a valid driver's license. The driver must carry that license while operating the cart. [State law]

Each passenger under age 12 must wear a fastened seat belt on public streets and highways. [State law]

Golf carts may operate at night only when equipped with working headlights and taillights. [State law]

A cart without those lights may operate from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset. [State law]

Golf carts may travel on roads posted at 35 mph or less. They may cross a faster road at an intersection. [State law]

The four-mile limit runs from the address on the registration certificate. Golf carts may not travel along town sidewalks. [Town ordinance]

The owner must get an SCDMV permit decal and registration certificate. The application requires proof of ownership, liability insurance, and a $5 fee. [SCDMV form]
